Here’s how:
The finish
Oil-based varnishes are the best kind and are what we recommend in the majority of cases; always apply a minimum of two proper coats to ensure you have adequate coverage. We recommend that you avoid water-based finishes as, in our experience, they tend to peel or crack when in moist environments like a bathroom.
How often should you re-varnish
Many suppliers will over-egg the pudding on this one; they’ll tell you that you should re-varnish every couple of years, but this isn’t strictly necessary. Yes it won’t hurt, but really you should only re-varnish if you notice any wearing or visible scratches; in reality, a good coat of varnish could last for a decade if you really take care of your vanity.
Materials
We can help you to choose the best materials for your needs, but as a rule of thumb, you need hard-wearing timber of good quality that can cope with moisture. Some good examples are Spotted Gum, Victorian Ash and Blackbutt.
